In order to guarantee the sustainability of this model, decisions must be taken in such a way as to minimize the overall risk of the company and taking into account technical, human and financial resources. While the company has changed its name a few times over the years, in addition of going public in 1951, it has always known how to fulfill its mission : to provide Montrealers with fast, reliable, and economical transportation.
There are about 170 metros systems worldwide. Over 70% of these facilities are over 70 years old. It is a segment that requires high technology and intensive capital. Since the public authority owns these systems, there is a great dependance on public capital.
In this scenario, investment in expansion straddles reinvestment and modernization. The adoption of policies and new technologies that allow the use of assets in their life cycle and that plan their replacement in optimum time is essential to maintain the quality, security, and regularity of the service.
This session will focus on the challenges management of end-of-life renewal of metros.

Municipal infrastructure is the foundation of a healthy and vibrant city. Many municipalities in Canada define assets to include all of the physical infrastructure necessary to support their social, economic and environmental services. These types of assets include, but are not limited to, tangible assets such as buildings, structures, roads, parks, public transportation, computer networks, water systems and intangible assets such as image, software, data and intellectual property.
Municipal infrastructure asset management (MIAM) refers to the practices, principles and theories of such asset management. While the practice includes the professional areas of risk, finance, engineering, economics, and information management, asset management practitioners are business strategists who see themselves as “Generalists” in each of these specialties and not as specialists in just one.
